Changes Ahead

07/09/19
I am writing to let you know about some big changes happening in our dance family starting this fall. Last spring, we signed a one year lease for our current space with the hope that we could find a sublease tenant to help share the building costs with. We met with several prospective tenants over the last 9 months, but they all eventually fell through. Knowing that our rent was going to increase significantly this fall, we broadened our search this spring to include potential new spaces for our studio home. To date, we have not been able to find something that would work for us that was also in our price range.
This past year has been challenging to say the least. The demolition and construction of our space last summer was utterly exhausting. Throughout the year we encountered so many unknown challenges that created additional building work and financial burden. Also, the time it took to manage and care for the space almost doubled my workload. There was no longer any balance in my life. I was sacrificing my personal health and well-being as well as precious time lost with my family. The most pressing concern however was the fact that the cost of our current space was significantly more than the studio brought in. My family has been investing a large sum of money each month to keep the studio afloat and we cannot financially support this endeavor anymore.
Unfortunately, Fueled & Aflame Dance Studio is simply not profitable at this time. Therefore, we have decided to shut down the studio. I know this announcement may come as a shock to some of you and I’m sorry we could not have given you more notice. I have been working so hard to prevent this from happening, but sadly it’s time to let it go. It has been such a privilege and an honor to work with all the students and families that have come through our doors over the last nine years. Ms. Chelle, Ms. Olivia and myself are so grateful that you chose Fueled & Aflame Dance Studio for your dance training needs.
We will be finishing out our summer class session. We will also still be running the Island Vibes Moana dance camp in a few weeks and are still accepting registrations for that camp. However, all other camps will be canceled. For students who want to keep dancing - we do plan to continue teaching classes, holding workshops, and hosting performances for our dance companies. I know this letter is long, but keep reading for more details on that!
You may be aware that Fueled & Aflame consisted of two separate business entities. While we are shutting down the dance studio (a separate LLC), we plan to continue work with our non-profit organization which is what our dance companies operate under. We even hope to expand the scope of what we can offer through the dance companies by adding seasonal workshops and technique classes for our company members. Fueled & Aflame began as a dance company almost 20 years ago and we are super excited to shift focus back to the heart and the structure that we were founded on. Our companies allow us to do more than just teach dance technique. They offer a teamwork component and activities that are both fun and nurturing for our dancers. We cherish that additional time in rehearsals that allow us to build relationships with the dancers and invest in their growth as artists of faith!
For those of you with dancers who might be interested in our dance companies now that the studio isn’t an option, we will be holding a second company audition on Tuesday, July 9th. We are also planning to add a junior company program this fall for dancers ages 7-9 that will meet weekly for 90 minutes of class and rehearsal. The junior company will perform at our Christmas and spring dance concerts along side our other three dance companies. If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please respond to this email as soon as possible so that I can schedule your audition. Audition times may vary depending on which company program you’d like to be a part of. If you are reading this after 7/9/19 but are still interested in being a part of one of our dance companies, please message the Facebook page, we may be able to accommodate more dancers at a later date.
Of course all these plans are dependent on finding affordable space that we can utilize on a regular basis. I am in the process of searching for space to rent to so we can continue our company activities. If you know of any churches, schools, community centers, fitness or dance studios that would be willing to rent to our nonprofit please let us know. Current and prospective company members, please keep in mind that moving to a new space may change the day and times of our company rehearsals, as well as technique classes offered (and requirements). We will share this information with you as soon as we have it available. July/August rehearsals will continue as planned in our current space so that we are ready for Project Dance Pittsburgh!
We are so thankful to have been a part of your dance journey. If you will not be participating in our dance companies this season, please know we will miss you so much and that we wish you and your family all the best. Otherwise, we look forward to dancing with you in our 2019-2020 company season!
Sincerely,
Carla Crowe
